What AI integration means in practice
AI integration connects a model to the systems and data behind an existing business activity. When someone uses a chat tool on their own, they copy the output into their work. With integration, that output feeds into the business process, where its effect can be measured.
Where Italian businesses stand
In 2025, 15.7% of Italian SMEs with 10 to 249 employees used at least one AI technology, compared with 7.7% the previous year. That share doubled in a year.
Only 8% of SMEs have an AI pilot or a structured project underway: 7% of small businesses and 15% of medium-sized businesses. Another 20% are considering starting one.
Italy's AI market was worth €1.8 billion in 2025, up 50% on the previous year. Of that market, 77% consisted of bespoke projects rather than off-the-shelf products.
The gap that matters
The 15.7% figure describes AI use; the 8% figure covers pilots or structured projects. They measure different things, but raise a practical question: how do you move from a colleague using an AI chat tool to a business with AI built into its work?
